Nuclear Safety Assistance to Central and Eastern Europe

Since early 1991, Bel V has been much involved in the European Commission (EC) programmes (PHARE and TACIS and its successor programmes INSC and IPA) for assisting Central and Eastern European countries in their efforts to improve the safety of their nuclear installations.

By delegation of the Belgian Safety Authorities, Bel V is the Belgian representative in the Regulatory Assistance Management Group of the EC.

Cooperation with international organisations


Informative exchanges with foreign Safety Authorities:

• close contacts with the French ASN (Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire) and IRSN (Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire)

• ad hoc meetings with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission

• consultancy work for the Dutch Safety Authority

• exchange on specific subjects with the Safety Authorities from Germany, United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, China, ...

European Commission  

• specific task forces, networks and committees for nuclear safety and radioactive waste management

Organisation for Economic Collaboration and Development  

• participation to the working groups established by the CSNI (Committee of the Safety of Nuclear Installations), the CNRA (Committee of the Nuclear Regulatory Activities) and the NSC (Nuclear Science Committee)

• FINAS coordination by delegation of the Belgian Safety Authorities

• Research projects such as ROSA, PRISME and Halden

International Agency for Atomic Energy  

• OSART, ASSET and IRRS missions

• participation to NUSSC, the committee supervising the elaboration of nuclear safety regulations
